Solar Energy to Offset Electricity Use, Energy Costs
There are only two weeks left for eligible nonprofit organizations to apply for the SRP EarthWise™ Energy and a chance to receive a complimentary photovoltaic (PV) system valued at approximately $60,000 each. These PV systems will allow nonprofits located in SRP’s service territory to offset a portion of their energy bill allowing them to direct more funds to the communities they serve.
SRP EarthWise Energy is a voluntary program that customers can participate in for as little as $3 per month with 100 percent of the funds utilized to donate solar PV systems to Valley nonprofit organizations. Since 2007, the voluntary fees paid by SRP EarthWise Energy customers have funded solar PV projects for community-based programs including A New Leaf Inc., Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix, Hospice of the Valley and the Desert Botanical Garden.
Not only do these projects allow the agencies to offset some of their energy use with clean, renewable energy and save money on their monthly electric bill, they also result in a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. A typical 10-kilowatt solar electric system helps to avoid the release of almost 20,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
SRP will evaluate the applications and approve the agencies that meet the criteria for the program. SRP customers will have the chance to vote for their favorite qualifying agency, and the agencies with the most votes will each receive a system.
To be considered for this program, nonprofits must submit an application, which can be found at www.srpnet.com/solarnonprofit, by 5 p.m., Oct. 1. Voting will occur in November and December, and the winners will be announced in January 2013.
