After spending nearly 1,000 days in jail, Tyler Kost is going home.

The San Tan Valley man was arrested just before graduating from Poston Butte High School in 2014, accused of sex crimes against several of his classmates.

His defense attorneys argued the victims may have colluded with each other and lied about their stories.

Last month, he took a plea deal and was sentenced to three years in prison, given credit for the days already served.

He was officially released Friday morning.

“I think they were feeling very relieved. It’s obviously been a long time coming,” said his attorney, Michael Alarid.

Kost is now registered as a sex offender. A label that will last him until the end of his 15-year probation. “So he was given permission to live at home with his parents and his younger brother,” said Alarid.

For now, they say Kost and his family want to stay out of the limelight, after spending so much time in the public eye over the last three years.

“I think they want to be as low key as possible so they can try to figure out the new normal for Tyler,” said Alarid. “If there’s any message it’s one of relief that they finally have their son home.”

Kost's attorneys say if his probation is terminated early, he could also shed that sex offender label sooner than 15 years.
