Project 22 gives veterans and shelter dogs a second chance

"Project 22 is saving vets and saving dogs and training shelter dogs that we get in here," he said.

Wolfe partnered with the Arizona Animal Welfare League, where he already works as a dog trainer, to train dogs that come into the shelter, teaching them to become service dogs.

"When he approached us about this, we felt strongly that it was important for our organization to get involved," said Michelle Ramos, AAWL's director of education.

The idea is to pair a veteran in need with a dog in need, and hopefully save some lives in the process.

The project's name is an ode to the sad truth that an estimated 22 veterans kill themselves every day.

Wolfe himself battles PTSD, depression and more.

"There's no program in place that shows you, this is how you be a civilian, this is how life is going to be from now on," Wolfe said.

He credits his service dogs for helping him cope and breathing life back into him.

Project 22 is his way of giving back, training dogs that have been cast aside to be at the sides of former soldiers who are struggling.

"He sees potential in dogs that a lot of people would walk by, and then he helps us see that potential," Ramos said. "And I've seen amazing transformations in a lot of these dogs."

Although the project is just getting underway, Wolfe already has three solid candidates he's working with daily, getting them ready for their new lives of service.

"For me, saving one person and saving one dog, it's success in my book," Wolfe said.
